Description
This trip is for the physically fit explorer yearning to delve deeper into the backcountry. It begins with a wading stroll down Coyote Gulch, the canyon that sets the standard for canyon beauty, with waterfalls, arches and a natural bridge that we'll walk under. Then we'll wade up the Escalante River, rarely deeper than mid-thigh, with an unobstructed view of Stevens Arch. Soon we'll enter deep, Stevens Canyon with lush vegetation, tall overhanging walls and plentiful water. Then we'll take to the benches high above the canyon floor to circumvent several tall pouroffs that block traveling on the floor. Once again on the canyon floor, we'll continue up canyon, pausing to appreciate the view and explore smaller side canyons. Up and over a pass between canyons and we'll enter an unmatched slickrock bench-land where you will marvel at the patterns created by eroded sandstone, explore the inner gorge and then hike to a point high above the Escalante River. Then after admiring a unique double arch, we'll decend to the river via a hidden chimney through the cliffs. Down the river for a few hours and we'll reach a seldom traveled route through a true gem of a canyon up to the broad openness of Les George Point and King's Mesa. Finally, we'll make our way back to Coyote Gulch and then to the trailhead to complete the trip. Along the way there will be plenty of time to read, play games, take pictures, eat great food, absorb the peacefulness of the desert and rejuvenate your spirit.
As with all of our trips, food and gear are provided. If you want to experience a true desert wilderness backpacking trip without the worrying about the complex planning and navigating involved, this trip is for you!
